Adam Bednarik
Interview with Adam Bednarik
Date: August 28th, 2006

[Jim]: What exactly happended to the shoulder? I know you've had a couple of surgeries, but what exactly are they trying to fix?
[Adam]: After the season, they found out that my shoulder actually had been extremely tight in there, and I lost a lot of range of motion in my throwing arm, and that's always caused a lot of the pain. So, in order for me to gain back my range of motion to 100%, they had to surgically go in and open up my caps.

By doing rehab, I was never really going to be able to get back to 100%, so they said they would have to surgically go in and open up my caps... this way, I could gain my range of motion back.

[Jim]: I know in high school you were an all-conference safety and all-conference wide receiver. Ever any consideration to... while you were repairing the shoulder... playing other positions?
[Adam]: It crossed my mind. I've always been a team guy and wanted to do anything to help the team. But then, it's been a while since I've done those things. But, I feel I would be able to adjust and do that. At the same time, deep at heart I feel I'm naturally a quarterback.

[Jim]: Lots of confusion (on this subject). Is this year a year lost in eligibility? Are you going to apply for a medical redshirt?
[Adam]: The coaches said they are going to apply for a medical redshirt for me. Hopefully, with the way my career has been so far... being that my shoulder has bothered me, not only for this past year, but it bothered me the year before... and I was playing with the injuries.
[Jim]: Do you feel positive with it (the chances of the medical redshirt)?
[Adam]: I feel positive.

[Jim]: How many credits do you have?
[Adam]: This semester? I have 13 credits right now.
[Jim]: Are you Athletic Coaching (major)?
[Adam]: Yes.
[Jim]: Do you want to go into coaching?
[Adam]: That's something I want to pursue, but I'd also like to pursue something in the teaching field too.
[Jim]: If you went into coaching, who on the current staff would you most associate your personality with?
[Adam]: Hmmm. I think I'd have somewhat of a combined personality within Coach Stewart and Coach Hand. I'm usually always in a good mood, smiling, laughing a lot. And, being that I'm a Christian... a Catholic man just like Coach Stewart. He and I are both very religious in our beliefs. At the same time, I can be very laid back and easy going, and have fun with the guys like Coach Hand does every now and then.

[Jim]: Do you remember the moment you decided WVU was where you wanted to go?
[Adam]: I can remember... I came to visit their first day of camp... I was going into my senior year in high school, and I came to see their first day of camp. I remember watching the first practice, and I took a tour of the facilities and stuff, and I said I really think this is going to be the place for me. Sure enough, I ended up coming.

[Jim]: Do you play PlayStation at all? Xbox or PlayStation?
[Adam]: I really don't play too much... not as much as I used to back in my high school days. But, if I do play, I usually play a little bit of NCAA Football.
[Jim]: When you're West Virginia, who's the quarterback... you or Pat?
[Adam]: (laughing) I honestly put myself in. Not too many people can say they're in a video game, so of course you're going to want to be yourself.

[Jim]: Your first 2 years... 2003 and 2004, where you were kind of in a learning role... who helped you out the most those years?
[Adam]: Most influential was definitely Rasheed... and Charles, both of them. Both of them helped me out equally, immensely. I really looked up to the two of them, and they really treated me like I was one of their own. They were really like older brothers for me.
[Jim]: How close were you to going in in the Wisconsin game?
[Adam]: I was pretty close. I remember standing on the sidelines that first game, and I got a little bit nervous. I saw Rasheed go down. And I think at one point Charles' shoulder pad strap had broke. And I thought I might have to go in, but we called a timeout and got it fixed in time. I remember my heart was racing a little bit.

[Jim]: What can you say about the fans of West Virginia? I know they're crazy. Do you have a funny memory?
[Adam]: One of the biggest memories I have about our fans in the 3-4 years I've been here was my freshman year when we beat Virginia Tech. All I remember is seeing students going down with pepper spray.
[Jim]: Did you get pepper sprayed?
[Adam]: I actually got pepper sprayed, because they were trying to get everyone else. They're crazy, but at the same time, I don't think there are any fans better than them. I think they're the best.
Editor's Note: Based on how post-game celebrations have evolved since then... especially in the triple OT win versus Louisville, we think the WVU fans have gotten even better.

[Jim]: What are you personal goals for this year?
[Adam]: The main thing is to get my shoulder healthy. That's what I want to do. Get my shoulder healthy and do whatever else off the field, since I won't be playing, to help the team.
[Jim]: Doing the signals?
[Adam]: I've been helping out a little bit. I'm just trying to help out the younger guys.

[Jim]: How long on the shoulder?
[Adam]: I'm not sure. My throwing program won't even start until the end of October, beginning of November... until I actually start throwing a little bit. I'm just trying to aim for spring... trying to get back for spring.
