He Said / She Said with Billy & Rachel
Everyone's favorite couple, Billy and Rachel, indulge us with the story of when they each chose WVU.

Both Billy and Rachel are a lot of fun, and both bleed Blue and Gold. This He Said / She Said segment lauches our new series here on WVGameDay.com. We hope you enjoy it.

Billy and Rachel
Billy was a WVU Lacrosse captain, I think the conference defensive player of the year (we're still fact checking), and received some award from the city of New York during the infamous black-out a few years ago.

Rachel, bless her heart, is married to Billy. She is a true WVU fan, tailgater, and well respected alumnus. She recently was one of the founders of the Central NJ chapter of the WVU Alumni Association.

Billy He Said:
The Day I Chose WVU

Sure, sure I went to WVU for an education. I even have two degrees (B.S.J. in Public Relations & an M.S. in Safety & Environmental Management) …Not too shabby for a guy whose pre-school teacher told his mother he may be mildly retarded. Anyway, my desire started in 1992. I was a junior in high school and I was going to visit my cool cousin Tommy (see core group photo) in Morgantown for a football game.

My parents thought it would be a treat to visit with Tom’s parents and I could visit with Tommy and my best friend, Tom’s little brother, Brian (see core group photo). Anyway, WVU was playing Syracuse that weekend. We arrived around 9:00pm Friday night and the excitement started from there…My family was staying at the Morgantown Motel on the top end of Rt.119 & Rt. 73 near Wal-Mart (which did not exist then)…You know the place… real classy…It makes the Bates Motel look like a Hilton…Anyway… Tommy and his cronies picked up me, my sister and Brian and took us back to their lovely home on Yoke Street….This green house made the Morgantown Motel look like the Ritz Carlton… (What a dump) …The house definitely should have been torn down and condemned then….They finally did it about 7 years later while I was at school … Anyway…

As we arrived at the house party, I was overwhelmed….After the long car trip, I really needed to take care of a little personal business (i.e. I had to take a crap)…..As I filed through the crowd looking for a friendly face…I spotted Steve aka Norm (see core group photo) and asked for use of the facilities…As he pointed me up the stairs, he handed me two cans of beer and a dirty magazine... Now that’s taking care of somebody… As everything released properly, I started to think this place may not be too bad for an education… I mean up to that point everyone was nice, the beer was cold and the lodging was prestigious… Anyway the night proceeded with Me + Beer = Wasted .

I passed out on an old, blue futon (not a fancy modern day futon but that old foam one-seater type…and it was covered in all sorts of stains) in front of the front door…I awoke the next morning to “It’s a Beautiful Morning” blasting throughout the house…By 6:30am we were on our way to “The PIT” (the original…no holds barred Pit)… As we drove down University Avenue, there were hundreds of people walking to the game all covered in blue and gold…When we arrived at the Pit, there were tons of people prepping for a long morning of tailgating…This was great…for breakfast I had “kegs and eggs” … The morning progressed in a typical WVU manner, and we began our journey to the stadium…Before the walk to the stadium, I was instructed to shove beers down my pants and under my coat…just in case I got thirsty in the game.

If you are familiar with Mountaineer football you know this is a pretty infamous game, and if you don’t know…please educate yourself … (here). WVU was ranked #23, Syracuse was ranked #14 and the referees [ this part was bleeped in an attempt to promote a family safe environment... Pete]. Those refs should be beaten like a Brazilian soccer player who scored on his own goalie (oh lay, oh lay…let’s go Italy) ...anyway...read about the game. The game was wild but so were the stands...Back in the day the opposing team’s band sat close to WVU student section….The Orangemen band was pelted with beer, beer cans and anything else students could get their hands on…Of course I nor anyone else I knew was a part of this…However… I do know the guy that threw the whiskey bottle on the field at the 1996 Miami game … After the brawl on the field, (see the link) the State Police thought it would be a good idea to remove the Orangemen band a little early…with disappointment the game ended…My 16 year-old heart was broken…My now beloved Mountaineers lost … but I did have one more night of partying with my mentors.

For the remainder of the night, we watched SportsCenter over and over to get the latest details of the game…Also, the pumpkin incident happened but that is a whole other story...Basically, at the end of this weekend I knew that I wanted to go to college at WVU…I will say that many details are missing and many names were not mentioned (I will tell you WVGameDay founder Jim wasn’t around much this trip…but just prior to this weekend his one eyebrow was shaved off by Rach. And, Lance was just some hillbilly nobody knew - yet)…When I got in my parent’s car Sunday afternoon, I said, “Mom, Dad. I am going to WVU!”

Let’s Go Mountaineers!

Rachel She Said:
The Day I Chose WVU

My story is a little more subdued. It all started in high school when the advisors told my class that we could be excused from school if we were visiting a college. By doing so, we would need to supply the administration office with a note from the institution and were free to play hooky for the day. The biggest deal was that we didn’t even have to let our parents know. WOW! Was I ever living on the wild side then!!!

I can’t quite remember why we chose WVU. I know that we had already gone to visit Pitt, so we needed another option. There it was a beautiful day and I, along with a car load of high school girls from Pittsburgh, hopped in the car and started out. We were getting sick from all the swerves and curves when we finally made our way into Morgantown. At first sight, it wasn’t all that exciting going past Arnold Hall, boring.

Then, we found ourselves sitting in front of the Mountainlair as classes let out and the parade of students passed by. Everyone hanging out at the Lair just looked so cool. Something was just right, the day was perfect, the scene was amazing, it was unbelievable. It was at college and I could be there too at West Virginia University!

Now with the idea of getting to explore the campus a little more, we made our way to the Evansdale Visitors Center. We filed in the little white building, ready to get our notes and continue our own tour. But, in order to get the note, we were required to take the official tour. There was no turning back. We filed into the big blue van and off we went.

Now, after driving by and seeing all the “cool” people outside the Lair, we were the exact opposite. We were these little high school girls following a guide explaining the blue light phones that were aimed to keep the students safe and all those truly exciting details about the school.

Once it was over, we were headed back trying to salvage the rest of the day. The tour really put a damper on our plans. But in the end, that was the day I realized that WVU is where I belonged.
