Q&A with the Positive Impact Football Campers
Date: July 13th, 2006

[Camper]: Have you ever been seriously injured?
[Jeff]: Yes I have. I've broken my ankle, I've torn both ACLs in my knees. I've broken 3 vertebrae in my lower back, I've dislocated my shoulder, had surgery on my shoulder, I've had some broken ribs. I've probably had 6 or 7 concussions, I've lost some teeth, I've broken almost every finger or thumb on this hand. It's a rough sport. The longer you play it, the more likely you are to get hurt. But again, those are parts of it, and if it had gotten to the point I couldn't play, I was ready to do something else because I had gone to school.

[Camper]: What position did you play?
[Jeff]: I played quarterback. In high school when I started out, I was quarterback and a linebacker. And, then my senior year in high school, we didn't have a tailback. So the coach asked me to move to tailback. So I played tailback, I played linebacker, I was the punter, and I returned punts and returned kickoffs.

When I went to college, I played quarterack. When I went to the NFL, I played wide receiver. I probably am, well I am the only quarterback that has blocked a punt, ran the ball and caught a pass before I turned quarterback. So, I tried to do everything I could to try to get out there.

[Camper]: What's your favorite touchdown?
[Jeff]: Well, one of my most favorite touchdowns, I think for me, was when I was playing at WVU and we were in the 4th quarter, we were playing against Pitt. And, there was about a minute to go and we scored a touchdown on a bootleg. That was one of my favorites.

Another one was probably in the Super Bowl. I threw a touchdown pass to a wide receiver, Steven Baker, in the corner of the endzone. Those are my two favorites.

[Camper]: How did it feel to play in the NFL?
[Jeff]: Well, in the NFL the guys are bigger, stronger, faster. Each level you go to, you'll find out. Each age group that you get, when you step up to the next level they got a little bit bigger, a little bit faster, a little bit stronger.

And then when you go from junior high up to high school, you'll see that they're a little bigger, stronger, faster. When you go from high school to college, they're a lot bigger, stronger, faster. And it's the same thing when you go to the NFL. They're all big, strong and fast.

[Camper]: What was it like to win the Super Bowl?
[Jeff]: Well, one of the things I can remember most was just waiting for us to run out. That was probably one of the greatest feelings. There's all kind of pressure knowing that you've got billions of people watching you. I mean billions and billions of people watching you. And it's across the world, it's not just the United States, it's across the world.

So, there's a lot of pressure involved with it, but it's a great, great opportunity to play in it. But, the one thing is you can't just go play in it. You have to win it. That's one of the games where if you make it, that's OK. But to take it, you better win it because there's real pressure in that.

[Camper]: Were you ever a substitute that went in when a quarterback was injured?
[Jeff]: Yes. I played before any of you guys were born. How old are you?
[Camper]: Nine.
[Jeff]: OK. I was in the NFL for 6 1/2 years (before getting his shot; 15 years total in NFL). And, I played special teams, I played wide receiver. I did everything I could to try to get on the field. But, they had a quarterback that played it before I got there. So, I had to wait. And, I was waiting, waiting, waiting. And one day he got hurt. When he got hurt, I had to go in and play. And, 6 games later, we won the Super Bowl.

So, it's one of those things where I had to be ready. And, you're waiting, waiting, waiting, and don't think you're going to get a chance to play. But, you've still got to prepare. And, I had that opportunity, and I was a substitute. I got the starting job. And, we won the Super Bowl.

[Camper]: What is your favorite NFL football team?
[Jeff]: Now? Aaaaaa.... it'd have to be the Steelers!
[crowd applauds]

[Camper]: How much do you bench?
[Jeff]: When I was in college, my max I think was 350. And, I have 3 boys. One of them actually is going to walk on to WVU. And so, he and my younger son and I try to lift. I have to lift a little bit to try to keep my shoulders from seeming like they're going to fall off. I can still bench about 320 right now, so I'm OK.

[Camper]: What was the hardest team that you ever played against?
[Jeff]: The hardest team that I ever played against was the Philadelphia Eagles. And the reason why it was the Philadelphia Eagles... lots of these guys you may not know of... but they had 4 of the best defensive linemen that played in the game at that time. And, one of them was Reggie White. Reggie White was a phenomenal football player. They had a guy named Jerome Brown. And, Pitts. And... I can't even remember the other guy.
[Jim]: [yelling from the back of the audience] Clyde Simmons!
[Jeff]: Clyde Simmons!

And, it was without a doubt the toughest team to play against. Because when we would play them, we would play them in Philadelphia. And Philadelphia's turf field was the worst turf field to play on. It was like they just put some carpet down on top of the concrete. And so you always knew that whenever we played Philadelphia that it was going to be 5 or 6 days after the game before you started feeling good, because they were going to hit ya, and they were going to hit ya hard, and they were going to hit ya often.

That was the strongest, worst team I ever played. In fact, my last play as a New York Giant, it was against Philadelphia. And, all 4 of the defensive linemen hit me at the same time... which was a good thing because they couldn't land on me all together. But, that was about 1,200 pounds, maybe 1,300 pounds, that hit me at the same time. And, that was a sack, and that was one of the last things I remember about the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hey guys, I really appreciate it. Good luck with everything. Work hard and work hard in school, OK? Thanks guys.
