| [Jim]: |
First a question you probably get asked a lot. What made you come to WVU? |
| [Major]: |
It was close, you know. |
| [Jim]: |
Not closer than Pitt, though. |
| [Major]: |
Pitt?... no. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
You spent a lot of time with Coach Nehlen. I've asked other players of his this question. What's your favorite Nehlen saying? |
| [Major]: |
Saying? |
| [Jim]: |
Yeah... like "daggonit". |
| [Major]: |
Aww... no saying, but he liked to butt heads. |
| [Jim]: |
Huh? |
| [Major]: |
He'd come up to you, and just rub his head against you. |
| [Jim]: |
Huh? |
| [Major]: |
Uh huh. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
We all know "The Play". What other play in your career will you never forget? |
| [Major]: |
At Penn State. I scrambled one way, the back went the other way. I threw it to our fullback to the one yard line. If the play would have stood, we would have beat Penn State that year too. |
| [Jim]: |
Why did they call it back. |
| [Major]: |
Lineman downfield. We looked at the film. Touchy call. |
| [Jim]: |
1987, right? |
| [Major]: |
Yeah, the year before the time we beat them. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
So, how did you meet your fiancee? [her name is Sheri and was sitting right next to him] |
| [Major]: |
Oh. Just out. |
| [Jim]: |
That's it? She told me you stalked her. [Sheri is nodding] |
| [Major]: |
Hey, well you know... |
| |
| [Jim]: |
I've read before that "The Play" was a result of you forgetting the play. Is that true? |
| [Major]: |
Well... it was 28 or 29 stack option. I forgot which way it went. The play clock was low. I called the play and was rushing everyone to the line, and I just kept thinking "clock, clock". We got it off, but after the snap, I brain locked. |
| [Jim]: |
Well, no one is complaining now. What did you say to Coach Nehlen after it? |
| [Major]: |
I just said, "I messed up". |
| |
| [Jim]: |
So, what are you doing now besides spending time with me? |
| [Major]: |
Coaching at my high school. |
| [Jim]: |
Brashear? |
| [Major]: |
Yeah. Coaching quarterbacks. Helping the young men there. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
Speaking of young men who need help, do you remember high-fiving a bunch of guys in togas one late night in the early 90s outside of Discount Den? |
| [Major]: |
Uhh? |
| [Jim]: |
That was me and my friends! It's one of the stories we still tell from our college days. Huge toga house party my friends had. You don't remember us?!! |
| [Major]: |
[looking very confused and laughing] Nooo. That's funny. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
Well, remember the block parties? |
| [Major]: |
Yeah. |
| [Jim]: |
You ever go? |
| [Major]: |
A little. I just remember not being able to move. Crazy. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
Where did you live back then? |
| [Major]: |
What's that street? Valley View? |
| [Jim]: |
Near the stadium. You live with other players? |
| [Major]: |
Yeah, that year I lived with Jamie LeMon and Rico Tyler. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
As a fan of WVU, anything you'll never forget? |
| [Major]: |
93. I came back to school in 1993. I was on the field after we beat Miami. I just kept thinking, those goal posts are big. |
| [Jim]: |
Did you have to dodge any pepper spray?! |
| [Major]: |
Nah, they let us. I just stood there looking at it thinking, will it actually fall? I'll never forget that. I kept thinking it was going to bust someone's head. |
| [Jim]: |
So that wasn't you marching them down High Street? I remember heading down from our house (not too far away) after hearing people had walked the goal posts from the stadium to High Street. |
| [Major]: |
I believe it. Those people were crazy. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
I know you've got a good woman now. Since she's sitting right here, I'll put you on the spot. What's the last thing you did to really make her mad. |
| [Major]: |
[stunned look] Ask her. |
| [Sheri]: |
Come on, answer it! [slapping him on the arm] |
| [Major]: |
[silence] |
| |
| [Jim]: |
[laughing] Alright, how 'bout this then... what's one thing you did to make Coach Nehlen mad? |
| [Major]: |
Not me, but when Tony had us do the Mountaineer rap. |
| [Jim]: |
Tony Caridi? Coach Nehlen was mad? |
| [Major]: |
Yeah. He was mad. |
| [Jim]: |
You remember why? |
| [Major]: |
Dunno. Just remember he was really mad. |
| |
| [Jim]: |
OK, you didn't remember me in the toga, but do you recall the 5 foot 10 white guy that played intramural basketball against you in 1989? I think our team name had to do with a malfunctioning body part or something that year. |
| [Major]: |
Yeah, you were good [sarcasm and laughing] |
| [Jim]: |
I remember thinking we didn't do as bad as I expected. I remember your team was stacked. I think you had Reggie Rembert too, right? |
| [Major]: |
Yeah. Reggie was on that team. We lost in the championship to the guys that ran study hall or something. |
| |
| Thank you, Maj. It was truly an honor. Congrats and best wishes on your upcoming nuptuals. |
