The fall 07 league rugby season is now under way for the WVU rugby team. With a solid second place finish in the 06 fall season and an ambitious spring and 07 fall tune –up match schedule the WVU ruggers are primed for bigger and better results this fall.
Spring 06 and 07 fall highlights (to date) included: a 3rd place finish at the well known Cherry Blossom tournament, a 3rd place result in the ever competitive Ohio Classic Tournament and a 4th place slot in the Virginia Blue Grey Classic tournament. Along the way the WVU men’s rugby football club have knocked off solid teams that include: Fordham University, Cornell University, Drexel University, James Maddison University, Ball State University and Marry Washington University.
Such winning results coupled with veteran leadership, a returning coaching staff, youthful promise of up and coming players already with game and system experience here at WVU and the energy that new recruits with high school playing experience adds figures to culminate into a championship formula.
The WVU men’s rugby football club is a member of the Allegheny rugby union which is overseen by USA collegiate rugby Division II. This year’s team is led by captains Tommy French and Brendan Fitzgerald who hail from Rockaway New York and were groomed through high school rugby at the “rugby known” high school Xavier Jesuit in New York. The coaching team of Jon Niles and Riley Fell are also intact for a strong run at the league title; therefore consistency and leadership appear to be strength of this year’s team. This year’s squad has a veteran physical forward pack that works hard to produce the ball to our explosive athletic back-line. If things go according to plan the WVU men’s rugby football club will no longer be setting goals just to simply to win the Allegheny Union, their goals will shift to winning the Division II collegiate Mid West Championships.
