WVU Ski Team 2007 Men's Conference Champs
-- By Co-Captain Doug Lesser
|
While everyone was watching us upset UCLA another one was in the making.
My name is Doug Lesser, and I'm a senior from York, PA. I am also VP of the WVU Ski Team as well as a Co-Captain. The men just won the 2007 Allegheny Collegiate Ski Conference over the weekend at Penn State in a huge upset. The team is a club sports team and has been competing since the early 1980's. The conference started in 1981 and as far as we know we have only won the conference once before in 1984. Our team typically finishes between 3-7 out of 11 teams in the Conference. The women finish about the same. The top 4 teams advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals and then can advance to Nationals.
Going into this past weekend behind Penn State by 2 points and we were tied with Navy. The rest of the schools were significantly behind these three schools. We won the slalom race on Saturday, with Navy finishing 2nd, and Penn State 3rd, which setup a one race showdown for the Conference Championship on Sunday. Going into the second run in giant slalom behind Penn State by 2.5 seconds we stormed back and won the race by a total of .15 seconds and giving us the conference trophy. We also ended the year with 4 guys in the top 10 in the conference. Our woman finished fourth in the conference for the year and also move onto regionals. We now move onto the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at Elk Mountain February 22-24.
We are proud to bring back the trophy for the school and do it on Penn State's home turf. We as a team are trying to show that we are a legit team that races against other D-1 schools, some of which are on scholarships.
LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!
